Mission of the Month

Matthew 25:37-40 [NIV] (37)“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? (38)Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? (39)When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ (40)“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters you were doing it to me!’

The Mission of the Month (MOTM) is a program to emphasize the need for giving, above and beyond, what is given to the Church. By serving others, we serve Christ and fulfill the mission that he left us.

2 Cents a Meal

Proverbs 19:17 - "He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done."

Cents-Ability originated in 1976 as "Two-Cents-A-Meal," a project begun by Presbyterian Women to involve individuals and families in a corporate response to world hunger. Over the years, presbyteries have developed similar programs entitled Pennies for Hunger, Nickel -A- Meal, etc. Many of these programs benefit local hunger ministries as well as the national and international projects of the Presbyterian Hunger Program. (PHP).

Named for Dr. James Henley Thornwell, theologian, Thornwell opened its doors on October 1, 1875, to 10 orphaned children. Dr. Jacobs’ belief “that God so willed and would, therefore, support the endeavor,” carried him and his beloved orphanage through the post-war years up until his death in 1917. Now each year on October 1, the Thornwell Home honors Dr. Jacobs and his dream; and gives thanks to God not only for the children and their community, but also for the willingness of God’s people to support this ministry for children in need.

Facts about Hunger:

  • More than 800 million people in the world are chronically undernourished (1 in 7).
  • In developing countries one child in 10 dies before his fifth birthday.
  • Six million children die each year from malnutrition and hunger related causes. That's over 16,000 a day.
  • In the U.S., 12 million children live in households where there is not enough to eat.
  • One in ten households in the U.S. is living with hunger.
  • The wealthiest fifth of the world's people consume an astonishing 86% of all goods and services, while the poorest fifth consumes 1%.
  • 32% of the population in the developing world lives on less than $1 per day.
  • 21 million people turned to America's Second Harvest food banks in 1997; 40% were from working families.
  • In nearly 25% of all rural counties, 1 in 5 people have been living below the poverty level for at least four decades.
  • About 2.5% of the federal budget is spent on food assistance.

Geneva Presbyterian Church will donate $100, along with any designated giving by the Congregation. If you wish to donate to this charity, please write "MOTM" on the memo field of your check and drop it in the offering.
