I recently heard about a strange ocean animal called the sea squirt. It is interesting that a young sea squirt will travel through the sea searching for a suitable rock or piece of coral to cling to and make its home for life. When it finds its spot and takes root, it somehow knows that it doesn’t need a brain anymore. So it begins to eat its own brain!
I don’t ever want to become like the sea squirt. I don’t ever want to get to a place where I am so comfortable and content with the status quo, with the way things are, that I allow my brain or my spirit to atrophy. In contrast, I want to continue to be challenged to learn new skills, and to act in new and better ways. I want to grow in my ability to give, in my ability to forgive, and in my ability to be compassionate to others. My prayer is that you and I would never become like the sea squirt! Instead, may we trust God to continually guide and lead us to new and abundant life!
Gracious God, there is a profound longing in each of us for a life that is deep and meaningful. Thank you for all those people who have loved us and guided us, and helped us find a path. Give us the courage to continue to learn and grow. In our own seeking, re-mind us that it is always in giving that we receive. We set our hope in you again this day. Amen.
